The NBC Nightly News did a report on two new studies which suggest that for a minority of women who take bone strengthening drugs for more than five years the drugs actually increase bone loss, instead of decreasing it. The drugs are used to treat osteoporosis and include popular drugs Boniva and Fosamax. They are part of a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. The FDA is now launching an investigation. Here's the report:

| Hydrolized Vegetable Protein Recall May Become Biggest Food Recall in U.S. History
11.03.2010 7:00 0 views 0 comments Tags: Consumer, Nest, Mark, Four, Our News, Recent, PostOn, Center, Michael, Bloomberg, Drew, University, Protest, Recall, Move, Safety
A recall of food flavorings containing salmonella may lead to the biggest food recall in consumer history. Bloomberg reports that nearly 10,000 products could be involved.
PepsiCo Inc. joined Procter & Gamble Co., Nestle SA and McCormick & Co. yesterday in recalling food containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein, or HVP. The widespread use of the flavoring means more companies will follow, said Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumers Union, the Yonkers, New York-based advocacy group that publishes Consumer Reports magazine.
More than 100 items, including two flavors of P&G's Pringles and a store-brand ranch dip found in Wal-Mart Stores Inc., had been pulled as of yesterday, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Web site. Soups, sauces, chili, hot dogs, snack foods, dips and dressings are among the processed foods that often contain the vegetable protein, according to the FDA.
"It's a wake-up call for the food industry as a whole to be more thorough in evaluating the safety of ingredients," said Michael Doyle, director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia. "Big companies are putting their trust in suppliers, which is their Achilles heel."
So far, no one has actually gotten sick from the contaminated HVP or hydrolyzed vegetable protein, which is used in thousands of food products. Foods that are cooked, such as meats, have a low risk of infecting people but uncooked foods such as chips and dips could be a real problem.
The endless stream of contaminated food products not only makes people sick -- and can kill the very young or the very elderly -- it also will cost food companies worldwide around $15 billion a year in the future, according to industry analysts. It's clear that our food system needs a major overhaul with much stricter standards for food and food supplement preparation.

| Oscars Boost Expected for The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker movie won both the Best Director and Best Picture awards the 82nd Academy Awards. Films that win Best Picture typically see a boost in box office revenues and in DVD sales. Bloomberg reports that analysts expect the film's box office sales to double. The film has only made $21.4 million at the box office worldwide so doubling ticket sales will not be that significant.
Expanding the film to 1,000 theaters in the next few weeks would boost its worldwide box-office sales to an estimated $40 million, said David Joyce, an analyst with Miller Tabak & Co. in New York. The movie has taken in $21.4 million in global ticket sales since its June 26 release, according to Box Office Mojo, a researcher based in Sherman Oaks, California.
The Oscar box office bump is probably expected to be low because The Hurt Locker has been available on DVD since January. The Bloomberg article does cite media analyst Hal Vogel, who thinks the film could sell another 1 million DVDs, which would be very significant. This would be in addition to the 725,000 Hurt Locker DVDs that have already been sold.

Bravo TV's blog announced several series pickups and new shows in development. The pickups include the return of The Fashion Show with Isaac Mizrahi for a second season.
Internationally acclaimed designer Isaac Mizrahi returns for season two of "The Fashion Show," which follows professional designers as they strive to make their mark in the dog-eat-dog world of fashion and compete for a chance to have their winning designs sold for the mass retail market. "The Fashion Show" averaged more than one million viewers in its freshman season. Produced by Left/Right Productions for Bravo with Banks Tarver and Ken Druckerman as executive producers.
The post doesn't say whether or not Kelly Rowland is returning on the show with Isaac Mizrahi. Some people in the comments on the Bravo TV post are freaking out because the Rachel Zoe Project wasn't mentioned as a returning show. There is no need to freak out because a third season was confirmed in January.

| Apple's iPad Will Have at Least Fifty Competitors This Year

Computerworld reports that chip developer ARM is predicting that at least 50 touch tablet PC devices will be launched this year to compete with the Apple iPad.
The coming swarm of tablets has even prompted ARM, Intel's main rival in the mobile microprocessor business, to rent more space at the Computex electronics trade show in Taipei this year to show off the devices, in addition to e-readers, mini-laptops and other devices that use ARM processing cores.
"The first tablet devices will launch in the second quarter by [mobile network] carriers," said Roy Chen, ARM's worldwide mobile computing ODM manager, during a press meeting in Taipei. "You'll see a lot more in the third quarter."
Some of the devices that will be competing with the iPad include the HP Slate, Dell Mini 5 and Joojoo. Obviously, these tablets are just the tip of the iceberg and there will be a huge variety of tablets for consumers to choose from by the third and fourth quarter of this year.

Engadget is reporting that 3D glasses for Sony's new 3D LCD TVs will cost about $133 each. You will also need an infrared emitter which costs about $55. Engadget says Sony's LX900 3D TV will come with two sets of the glasses.
Sony's price meets earlier expectations that the 3D glasses would cost a family of four about $400 to $800. The 3D glasses prices probably need to come down considerably for 3D TV to go mainstream.

We are just obsessed with Lost and this last season has been fantastic so far. We've had many questions answered, but there are so many more that need answering. Kristen dos Santos of E! cornered Nestor Carbonell (who plays the mysterious Richard Alpert) at PaleyFest and got him to give a few hints about what's coming up in episode 9 (all about Richard) and episode 15 (in which not one of the main cast appears). We can't wait to find out about Richard's backstory. Was he a slave on the Black Rock? Was Jacob's gift to him (everlasting youth) really a curse? And whose side is he on, anyways? Take a look:

| 2010 Oscars: Carey Mulligan's Diamond Earrings
10.03.2010 17:45 0 views 0 comments Tags: These, Nest, Mark, From, Our News, Recent, PostOn, Photo, Carol, Diamond, Peter, Oscar
Carey Mulligan wore some fabulous vintage diamonds at the Oscars. These statement earrings are by Fred Leighton. The Cascading Diamond and
Diamond Briolette Earrings were made in the 19th century. Vintage diamonds will never sparkle as much as modern diamonds, because they were cut by hand instead of a computer-guided laser after being analyzed by a sophisticated software program, but they have a charm all their own.
The earrings were a bold and interesting choice which contrasted nicely with Carey's very modern Prada couture black gown, which featured tiny watch gears, forks and knives sewn on the bodice and skirt. Carey's styling reflects a youthful, fun sensibility and a subtle sense of humor.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore some fabulous jewelry at the Oscars. To complement her Chanel Haute Couture gown, she wore a bevy of bracelets from Fred Leighton, including a 1950's Diamond Swirl Bracelet, a Cognac Diamond Flexible Bracelet, a Rose-Cut and Diamond Bracelet. But she also mixed in some modern touches with her vintage diamonds: a Chanel temporary tattoo, which she's showing off to a friend in the photo above. The temporary tattoo is in the middle of her wrist, with diamond bracelets on either side.

Barbra Streisand presented Kathryn Bigelow with the Best Director Oscar for Kathryn's work on The Hurt Locker. Kathryn wore a titanium silk satin Yves Saint Laurent Edition Soir gown by Stefano Pilati. The sleeveless gown featured hand embroidery on the bodice. Kathryn accessorized the look with Yves Saint Laurent silver t-strap sandals and a YSL titanium satin clutch.
Her diamond earrings and bracelet were by Boucheron. Her red plastic wrist band is worn in support of The Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation, which assists bomb disposal technicians injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Barbra opted for a Randolph Duke black tuxedo skirt and jacket, with an ivory lace blouse with a plunging neckline. The black skirt featured a side slit. It's an unusual look for Barbra who has worn some amazing gowns, but it's extremely flattering and really fun. Barbra accessorized the look with a string of diamond necklaces and diamond earrings. We think she should have amped up the eye makeup a bit, though, to set off her gorgeous eyes.

| 2010 Oscars: George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis

George Clooney took his Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis to the Academy Awards. George looked dapper as always in a single breasted Giorgio Armani black tuxedo with notched lapels, although he was in desperate need of a haircut. Elisabetta wore a red satin, strapless gown by Roberto Cavalli which featured red beading detail on the train and a red velvet cape. She carried a Ferragamo clutch.
The dress seemed a bit tight for her and -- according to this report -- split right down the back early in the evening, and had to be repaired on site. Some reports say George sewed it back up, which we don't believe for a minute. You know he was kidding when he told some journalist that he did the repairs.
